Foreword

This dictionary has been specially written for Babwisi and other potential Lubwisi Language speakers—both those that wish to acquire the language formally and those who will do so informally.

It is going to be an extremely useful tool for enhancing the teaching and learning of Lubwisi in schools and as a supplement and reference tool for other literature. It is also a response to Thematic Curriculum as the Uganda Government Policy on Local Language Teaching. In Chapter 4 of the Uganda Constitution, it is stipulated in Article 37 “Every person has a right as applicable to belong to, enjoy, practice, profess, maintain and promote any culture, cultural institution, language, tradition…” This dictionary does just that.

The vocabulary has been selected to cover a variety of words that people use in their daily conversation—both informally, and during wider interactions in moral, social, political, agricultural, commercial, and other avenues.

The Kwamba Lubwisi Development Association (KLDA) trusts that whoever uses this dictionary will find it not only a vital reference tool, but also the foundational basis for other literature in Lubwisi that will be published in the future.

Special acknowledgement and thanks must be given to all those who have participated in the development of the Lubwisi language and who have brought about the publication of this dictionary. To all of you, and to SIL International, the NGO who has funded this dictionary and its first printing, the Association is indebted.
